Kuveyt Türk
Parent Company: Kuwait Finance House
Activity
Participation Banking and Financial Services
Reason for Boycott
Kuveyt Türk formally operates as a participation bank rather than a conventional interest-based deposit and lending institution. It states that its financing is structured through methods such as murabaha, mudarabah, leasing and commercial partnership. It would therefore be inaccurate to present every Kuveyt Türk product as conclusively interest-based without examining the underlying contract. Nevertheless, its financing products may involve predetermined deferred-sale prices, profit rates, collateral requirements and substantial total repayment obligations. These products can resemble conventional loans in their economic outcome and may cause financial harm when customers take on unaffordable debt. The classification should therefore consider actual contract structure, total repayment and borrower vulnerability rather than relying only on the “interest-free” label. No verified evidence was found showing that Kuveyt Türk or its controlling shareholder KFH directly finances the Israeli military, illegal settlements or oppressive military structures operating in Palestine, East Turkestan, Kashmir, Arakan, Syria, Yemen or Sudan. Kuveyt Türk has instead provided banking infrastructure for AFAD’s Palestine and Gaza relief campaigns. The bank continues to issue products connected to Mastercard, but customers can request a physical Sağlam Kart using Türkiye’s TROY payment network. The availability of TROY is a meaningful positive alternative, although it does not make the bank completely independent of international card networks. Considering financing-related consumer-harm concerns, continued Mastercard relationships, the availability of TROY and the absence of verified military complicity, Kuveyt Türk should be classified as Conscience-Based / Discretionary.
